Wind Ensemble Conducting student leads performance
The highly selective master and doctoral degree programs in wind conducting offer individualized training under the leadership of program chair Timothy Salzman in an interactive environment of collaborative research and musical exploration.
Distinguished Faculty
Graduate wind conducting students work with faculty conductors of the UW’s four wind bands and are engaged in every facet of conducting, guiding each ensemble through various on-campus performances, outreach endeavors, international touring opportunities, and interactions with renowned soloists, composers, and guest conductors from around the world. Wind conducting students rehearse and conduct quarterly performances with the Campus and Concert Bands as well as the UW Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band.
Performance Opportunities
In addition to quarterly performances on campus and at various off-campus venues such as community colleges and high schools, conducting students help to stage the annual Pacific Northwest Band Festival, featuring clinics, concerts, and adjudication for some 2,000 participating high school musicians from around the state. Students also take leadership roles in arranging international touring and performance opportunities and other special activities and performances.

Graduate Support and Career Opportunities
The masters and doctoral degree programs in Wind Conducting are geared toward students preparing for academic appointments at the university and secondary school levels. Students in the program assist the directors of the UW’s top auditioned wind bands, and hone their own leadership skills as conductors of non-auditioned wind ensembles open to students from all across the university.
Recent graduates of the program are leading thriving careers in academia, holding tenure-track positions at colleges and universities nationwide as well as internationally in addition to appointments as band directors at the high school and middle school levels.
