Timothy Rice

Timothy Rice is a professor of ethnomusicology at the UCLA, where he teaches courses in ethnomusicology theory and method and the history of music in the West and the world. 

He received his MA and PhD degrees from the University of Washington, and he specializes in the traditional music of the Balkans, especially the Slavic-speaking nations of Bulgaria and Macedonia, with interests also in music cognition, politics and economics of music, musical symbolism, and ethnoaesthetics.

Highlights of Professor Rice’s career include his three-year position as editor of the journal, Ethnomusicology; a two-year position as president of the Society for Ethnomusicology; and a six-year term on the executive board of the International Council for Traditional Music.

His scholarly publications include May It Fill Your Soul: Experiencing Bulgarian Music, Music in Bulgaria, and Ethnomusicology: A Very Short Introduction.

He has served as the Associate Dean of UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture (2005-2008) and director of the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music (2007-2013).
