Steven Demorest named WMEA teacher of the year

Steven Demorest was recently named Higher Education Music Educator of the Year by the Washington Music Educators Association. The award recognizes honorees for outstanding contributions to the advancement of music education in Washington state.

A professor of Music Education at the School of Music, Demorest conducts the University of Washington Men’s Glee Club and teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in choral music methods, research methods, psychology of music, music and language, and the cognitive neuroscience of music. He is co-director of the UW’s Laboratory for Music Cognition, Culture and Learning.

The Washington Music Educators Association provides and promotes educational resources for music educators and students in public and private schools and colleges, including providing opportunities for teachers to improve their skills through conferences, in-service sessions, and publications.

Dr. Demorest’s award will be presented at the WMEA’s annual conference banquet in Yakima on Feb. 15, 2014.
