Conductor Bios 

UW Music DMA conducting student Mark Tse was awarded a 2015 American Prize.

Mark Tse is Director of Bands at SUNY Suffolk County Community College, conducting the Symphonic Band and Jazz Ensemble as well as teaching Understanding Music, Basic Musician ship and the History of Rock and Roll.  

He is also a doctoral candidate in wind ensemble conducting with Timothy Salzman at the University of Washington. In the 2016 American Prize competition, he won 3rd place for community band wind ensemble conducting, and an Honourable Mention for college/university wind ensemble conducting. In 2015, he won 2nd place for college/university wind ensemble conducting.

Tse holds a Master of Music (wind ensemble conducting) from the New England Conservatory, a Master of Music (music education) from the University of Western Ontario, as well as a Bachelor of Music (music education) and a Bachelor of Education (instrumental music) from the University of Toronto.

Previous to his graduate studies, Tse taught high school instrumental music for eleven years in the Toronto area, including concert bands, jazz ensembles, and classical guitar classes, and served as Department Head for many of those years. As a teacher, musical outreach was a priority as he forged new connections between area music programs and community bands, championing life-long music making.

Shayna Stahl (ABD) is currently in her final year in the Doctor of Music Arts/Instrumental Conducting program at the University of Washington. Currently she serves as Graduate Assistant Director of the UW Husky Marching Band, conductor of the UW Concert Band, and assistant conductor of the UW Wind Ensemble.  Her previous experience includes ten years as a staff member in the athletic band program at State University of New York Stony Brook including three years as Director of Athletic Bands. She also served for eight years as a music educator in the Middle Country Central School District where she taught Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, and Jazz Band. 

Shayna Stahl earned her Master of Arts in Liberal Studies from Stony Brook University and a Master in Music Education/Instrumental Conducting from The Hartt School of Music where she studied with Glen Adsit. She holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Temple University in Philadelphia where she studied horn with Shelly Showers and Dan Williams, both of the Philadelphia Orchestra. She has attended conducting workshops with numerous clinicians, including Michael Haithcock, Edward Cumming, Michael Colgrass, Jerry Junkin, Carl Sinclair, Mallory Thompson, Craig Kirchhoff, and Frank Ticheli. She is a member of the National Association for Music Educators, New York State School Music Association, Suffolk County Music Educators Association, College Band Directors National Association, Golden Key International Honor Society, Sigma Alpha Iota, and is an honorary member of Kappa Kappa Psi.

A native of Indiana, Doug Morin spent twelve years as an educator in North Carolina where his concert bands, marching bands and jazz ensembles earned numerous awards, recognitions, and superior ratings. Mr. Morin graduated from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music with a Bachelor of Music Education and earned a Masters of Music in Wind Conducting at the University of Southern Mississippi, where he served as Head Graduate Assistant for the Department of Bands. During his matriculation at Southern Mississippi the faculty from the School of Music selected him to receive the Outstanding Graduate Student Award. Currently, Mr. Morin is in his second year in the Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in Instrumental Conducting program at the University of Washington where he serves as the Graduate Assistant Director for the Husky Athletic Bands, Director of the Campus Band, and regularly conducts the Wind Ensemble. His primary conducting teachers include Dr. Catherine Rand and Professor Timothy Salzman. He has served as guest conductor, adjudicator, taught private lessons, and continues performing on euphonium, trombone, and tuba with collegiate groups, small ensembles, and jazz bands. He holds memberships in the National Association for Music Educators, Phi Kappa Phi honor society, and Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity, and the College Band Director’s National Association.

Ross Venneberg
Ross Venneberg is a Seattle-based trumpeter, conductor and educator. He is currently a third-year Doctor of Musical Arts student at the University of Washington where he performs in the Symphony Orchestra and Wind Ensemble, is co-director of the UW Campus Band, and is the founding director of the UW Brass. He studies trumpet with David Gordon and conducting with Timothy Salzman. 
 
Ross has performed with a variety of professional ensembles including the Philharmonia Orchestra (London), Lake Washington Symphony, Seattle Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra, Symphony Napa Valley, St. James Cathedral Brass, Seattle Chamber Brass and The Bay Brass. He has also performed at summer festivals such as the Aspen Music Festival, Marrowstone Music Festival, Miami Music Festival, and Spoleto Festival USA. Ross has toured throughout the United States and Europe in concert halls such as Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, the Berlin Philharmonie, Lincoln Center, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall. He has been fortunate to play under renowned conductors Ludovic Morlot, Sir Simon Rattle, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Robert Spano, and Michael Tilson Thomas.
 
As a soloist, Ross has been featured with the Seattle Collaborative Orchestra, the University of California Berkeley Symphony and the Sitka Fine Arts Camp Orchestra. He has also performed with the organists of the New York Philharmonic and San Francisco Symphony and performed at last year's Seattle Opera Gala. 
An advocate for education and outreach, Ross has held teaching positions at the Manhattan School of Music Arts-in-Education and Distance Learning programs, the Sitka Fine Arts Camp and has presented masterclasses at universities and music festivals throughout the Northwest. 
A native of Sitka, Alaska, Ross earned his Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude, from Saint Mary's College of California and his Master of Music degree from Manhattan School of Music. His notable teachers include Mark Gould, Adam Luftman, and Roger Schmidt. 
Lauren Hepburn

Lauren is pursuing her Master's in Music Education at the University of Washington. She received her Bachelor's degree from Central Washington University where she studied with Larry Gookin, Mark Lane, and Joseph Brooks. After graduation, Lauren was hired by Seattle Public Schools and taught band and orchestra at Broadview-Thomson K-8 for two years and then orchestra and choir at Whitman Middle School for three. While teaching, she also maintained a busy schedule performing in semi-pro and professional bands around the area. Lauren plays clarinet with the Washington Wind Symphony, Northwest Symphony Orchestra, and the Seattle Rock Orchestra. She also gigs on saxophone playing funk and jazz around the city with various project groups.
