Composition professor Joel-Francois Durand spent his summer working at the UW campus, but was rarely seen in the Music Building. Instead, the associate director of the School of Music logged more than 800 hours in the Department of Mechanical Engineering's machine shop, immersed in what he calls his "unipivot tone arm project." Cody Case with students
Ethnomusicology graduate student Cody Case is in Tunisia for the 2009-10 academic year, his study funded through a Fulbright U.S. Student Scholarship. Case is currently studying Arabic in Tunis, taking courses on the Maluf musical tradition in the Rashidiyya Conservatory, and learning to play the Arab lute known as the oud, his studies funded by the Fulbright Critical Language Enhancement Award. Warsaw Autumn 2009 Festival of Contemporary Music
School of Music Composition faculty Richard Karpen (also director of the School of Music) and Juan Pampin and alumnus Josh Parmenter were featured composers this fall at the Warsaw Autumn 2009 52nd International Festival of Contemporary Music.
