Students in the Modern Band expand their creative powers by applying outstanding musicianship to the creation of new music.
Studio Jazz Ensemble – MUSEN 346/546 B
The Modern Band, led by Cuong Vu, is a jazz rooted-ensemble with a primary focus on repertoire encompassing innovative trends in jazz of the last decade. Ensemble members are exposed to a wide range of musical influences that have pushed the boundaries of jazz as an art form. Students are encouraged to write original material for the ensemble and to apply the musical innovations of the artists of their generation to the sound of the group and its repertoire.
Rehearsals are Tuesdays and Thursdays, 12:30 pm – 2:20 pm

March 9 Studio Jazz Ensemble concert honors former UW jazz educator
In his 30 years at the School of Music, trumpeter Roy Cummings influenced the musical training of thousands of students, introducing them to the greats of the jazz art form and encouraging their professional and musical aspirations. He also was a cofounder of the School’s Jazz Studies Program, serving as its chair from 1979 to 1993.
The School of Music welcomes new faculty for the 2015-16 academic year, with new appointments in Strings, Instrumental Performance, Music Education, Jazz Studies, and more.
