Please see below for important information regarding core Music Theory and Musicianship requirements.

Music Theory and Musicianship Core Sequence (MUSIC 113/119-303/306)

Attention all students enrolled in or planning to take the Music Theory and Musicianship Core Sequence:

  1. Course Pairing: The core sequence consists of pairs of theory and musicianship courses that must be taken concurrently.
  2. Concurrent Enrollment: Each pair (e.g., MUSIC 113/119, MUSIC 201/204, etc.) must be completed simultaneously; separate enrollment in either course is not allowed.
  3. Grade Requirement: Students must achieve a minimum grade of 2.0 in each course within the sequence. Failure to meet this requirement will prevent enrollment in the next pair in the sequence.
  4. Retaking Courses: To continue in the sequence, students who receive a grade below 2.0 in any course will need to retake that course to meet the grade requirement.
  5. Course Availability: Each course in the sequence is offered only once per academic year.
  6. Graduation Impact: Achieving grades below 2.0 in any course will result in a delay in graduation of at least one year due to the sequential and annual nature of the courses.

Students are strongly encouraged to prioritize their performance in these courses to maintain academic progress and avoid delays in their program completion. If you have any questions or concerns, please consult your academic advisor.

* The postbaccalaureate degree program is designed to serve students who already have an undergraduate degree in music, but wish to become trained and certified in music teaching. Prospective students must apply to the University (see http://admit.washington.edu/Apply/Postbacs for deadlines) and audition for the music education faculty (see audition dates for information and dates). The degree programs above can serve as a guide for the post-baccaluareate student but decisions about what previous credits will transfer are made on an individual basis at the time of admission.
