The Natural Horn Through the Eyes of Composers and Performers: 1750 to the Present
Since the wide adoption of hand stopping around 1750, the natural horn has proved remarkably versatile at adapting to every stylistic trend which has swept through classical music. While composers were eagerly integrating the instrument into their orchestral and chamber textures, pedagogues and virtuosi were expanding the compass of natural horn technique and illustrating the possibilities in the form of horn duets. We will follow the progression of natural horn playing from the mid-18th century to the present by way of example, pairing representative orchestral excerpts with duets penned by the top horn players of the time.
