Concerto Competition winners named

Winners of the 2022 UW Concert Competitions have been named following three divisional competitions held in February at the School of Music.

Strings competition winner is Hannah Chou, violin, who performed the first movement of the Korngold Violin Concerto. Alternate is Dalma Ashby, violin, who performed the first movement of Henryk Wieniawski’s Violin Concerto #2. Adjudicators for the competition were Brendan Shea, concertmaster of the Boise Philharmonic, and Susan Gulkis Assadi, principal violist of the Seattle Symphony. Hannah Chou is a student of Ronald Patterson; Dalma Ashby is a student of Rachel Lee Priday. 

Woodwinds, Brass, and Percussion competition winner is Megan Hutchison, flute, a student of Donna Shin who performed the first movement of the Nielsen Flute Concerto. An alternate winner was not selected by this division. Adjudicators for this competition were Shannon Spicciati, oboe; and Brian Chin, trumpet. 

Keyboard competition winner is HyeYeon Kim, piano, who performed the first movement of the Chopin Piano Concerto No.1. Alternate is David Lin, who performed Mendelssohn’s Concerto in G minor, Opus 25. Both are students of Professor Craig Sheppard. Adjudicators for the competition were pianists Paige Molloy and Allan Park. 

All three winners perform their concertos with the UW Symphony on Friday, June 3, 7:30 p.m., at Meany Theater. More information is available here.
