Third-year student Mica Weiland decided she was going to start an orchestra.
The decision came from her desire to build professional experience in conducting, a track not offered for undergraduate students at UW.
“I’m a conductor,” Weiland said. “I study viola performance here at UW, but I’m an undergraduate student and you can’t major in conducting as an undergraduate. It’s pretty much unheard of. So in order to make music in that way and get that sort of experience, I just gathered a lot of my friends and colleagues and created an orchestra.”
