Spring 2023 Quarter Notes

Spring Quarter at the School of Music brings news of faculty appointments for 2023-24 and a recent boost to the Music Building Campaign from friends Steve and Sylvia Burges. Read more in this issue of Quarter Notes about these welcome developments as well as  other recent news from our students, faculty, and alumni. As we wrap up our 2022-23 performance season, we invite our graduating music students and alumni back to campus on Friday, June 2 for our first-ever UW Music Homecoming, featuring a year-end performance by the UW Symphony Orchestra and Combined Choirs with special guest, actor and UW alum Garret Dillahunt, as well as a post-concert celebration. Dr. Stephen Price joins the University of Washington School of Music faculty in September 2023 as the inaugural Paul B. Fritts Faculty Fellow and artist-in-residence in organ performance. A native of Buffalo, New York, he comes to the UW from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, where he has taught organ, church music, and music theory since 2018.  Price’s appointment is made possible by the organ builder and artist Paul B. The University of Washington School of Music announces the appointments of new faculty in Ethnomusicology and Music History for Autumn 2023. The Music Building Campaign has received a generous leadership gift from School of Music friends Steve and Sylvia Burges, whose contribution will help fund crucial updates to performance and teaching spaces in the Music Building. The couple has longstanding connections to the University of Washington.  Academic appointments, performances, career milestones, and other notable achievements.  Alumnus Anthony Vine ('13 MM Composition), a former student of Huck Hodge, has been awarded a Rome Prize in Composition, one of the world’s most prestigious composing awards. World premieres, new appointments, and prestigious opening gigs are among news reported recently by School of Music faculty Kelly Kitchens, Voice School of Music faculty member Kelly Kitchens has been appointed interim artistic director of Seattle’s Book-It Repertory Theatre. University of Washington Law faculty Peter Nicolas has gone back to school--this time studying music at the UW in addition to his work at the School of Law.
