Dr. Jack Unzicker, Assistant Professor of Double Bass at the University of Texas, Arlington, leads a masterclass owith students of Barry Lieberman on February 27th, and performs a recital on February 28th.

Dr. Jack Unzicker, Assistant Professor of Double Bass at the University of Texas at Arlington, is an active educator, orchestral and chamber musician, soloist, and conductor. He is currently the principal double bassist of Santa Fe Pro Musica, Dallas Chamber Symphony, and Plano Symphony Orchestra. He has performed as principal of the AIMS Festival Orchestra (Graz, Austria), Caminos del Inka, Caprock Pro Musica, Dallas Chamber Orchestra, Dallas Wind Symphony, Lubbock Symphony Orchestra, Metropolitan Classical Ballet, and Orquestra Divertimento (Costa Rica). He also performs with the Dallas Symphony, Dallas Opera, and Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. His recent concerto performances include three seminal works of Giovanni Bottesini, Concerto No. 2 in B Minor, Passione Amorosa, and the Gran Duo Concertante.
Dr. Unzicker is also an ardent and sought after chamber musician with recent performances with Amici di Corde San Marco, Caminos Del Inka, Chamber Music Festival Saugatuck, Dallas Chamber Orchestra, Gyros String Quintet, Orqesta Divertimento (Costa Rica), and Santa Fe Pro Musica. Dr. Unzicker has performed on four continents and across the United States.
Dr. Unzicker began teaching at The University of Texas at Arlington, as an Assistant Professor, in 2011. In addition to heading the double bass studio, Dr. Unzicker has also taught Orchestral Excerpts, Music History, Music Literature, Music in Film, Beginning and Advanced String Music Education, Ear Training, and Music Appreciation. He has also served on the faculties of Texas Tech University, Tarleton State University, Texas Woman’s University, North Texas Double Bass Camps, and Hong Kong Youth Music Camp. He currently serves on the board of the double bass performance and education organization Bradetich Foundation and is the Bass Forum Editor for the journal American String Teacher. Dr. Unzicker is featured in articles on playing and teaching the double bass in The Strad and Strings Magazine.
In the summers, Dr. Unzicker serves as Artist Faculty at the Texas Chamber Music Institute and the Assistant Director of the Jeff Bradetich Double Bass Master Classes. He has frequently performed, presented, and lectured at the International Society of Bassists, American String Teachers Association, and Texas Music Educators Association Conventions.
Dr. Unzicker received his Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music from the University of North Texas. He received his Bachelor of Music from Western Washington University. He performs on double bass made by Albert Jakstadt and a bow by Reid Hudson.
Dr. Unzicker is from Juneau, Alaska, and currently resides in Arlington, Texas with his wife, Dr. Martha Walvoord, Associate Professor of Violin, University of Texas at Arlington, and their two sons.
