The School of Music Composition program and the Washington State Music Teachers Association celebrate the creativity and musical voices of the next generation of composers in this concert of six new works by middle and high school composers from across Washington state. Developed through the inaugural UW Summer Composition Institute, the works were created over seven weeks of mentorship with UW graduate composition students and will be performed by UW student musicians on violin, clarinet, and piano.
Event Background
The UW Summer Composition Institute is a new pilot program at the University of Washington designed to provide middle and high school composers with an opportunity to develop their creative work through mentorship, collaboration, and performance. The inaugural program brings together six young composers from across Washington State, each of whom has spent the summer working one-on-one with a UW graduate composition mentor while also participating in group sessions and receiving feedback from fellow composers and performers.
As part of the program, each student has written a new work for violin, clarinet, and piano. The pieces will be rehearsed and performed by current and recent UW graduate student musicians in a final public concert at the School of Music. The performance will also be professionally audio and video recorded, giving the students a lasting recording of their work.
The program is a collaboration between the UW School of Music Composition Program and the Washington State Music Teachers Association, and is intended as a pilot for a recurring summer opportunity for young composers.
