School of Music students Rose Hiemstra (B.M. Music Education) and Madeline Ile (B.A. Voice; B.A. Communication) are 2021 Husky 100 honorees.

The UW-wide honor recognizes 100 undergraduate and graduate UW students exemplifying the Husky Experience in the classroom and beyond. Hiemstra and Ile were selected among 1,729 nominations and 597 applications from all three UW campuses.

In addition to her Music Education studies, Hiemstra is a violist who studies with School of Music Professor Melia Watras and who is active in promoting student voices through her work with the School of Music’s Student Advisory Council, of which she serves as president.  “The school has taught me what it means to advocate in support of the arts, for equity in my program, and for anti-racism in the School of Music," she says.

Ile, who completed degrees in Voice and Communication in Spring 2021, likewise acknowledges the valuable connections she has made at the UW as an activist and musician. “I look forward to continuing my advocacy through law,” she says, “and striving to make a difference for those who have faced adversity because of their gender, race, and/or sexuality.”
