Biography

Andrew B. Munsey is a Grammy-nominated recording engineer, producer, and drummer working across jazz and contemporary classical music. His recordings have been described as “a magnetic audio experience” (All About Jazz) while his sometimes unconventional mixing approach has been called “an ingenious use of the medium” by jazz critic Nate Chinen of NPR/WBGO. He has performed and premiered works at Lincoln Center, the Walt Disney Concert Hall, and Symphony Space, while his work as an engineer and producer of contemporary music can be heard on recordings from labels such as Albany, Avie, Bridge, Hat Hut, Mode, New Focus, New World, Northern Spy, and Nuema, among many others.

In 2010, he formed the Brooklyn-based production outpost BK Sonic Works, which focuses on creative sound and musical collaborations with artists, filmmakers, and composers producing works for cinema and installation. As a sound designer, re-recording engineer, and composer, his work has been exhibited and screened at the Anthology Film Archives, Brooklyn Museum, Centre Pompidou (FR), Fridericianum (DE), Guggenheim Museum (US), Museum of Modern Art, Van Gogh Museum (NL), and the Library of Congress with festivals including the BFI-London, International Film Festival Rotterdam, Melbourne, Sundance, and Toronto International Film Festivals. His work as a sound mixer for television has aired on the Comedy Central, Discovery, PBS, Smithsonian, and Spike TV networks.

As a drummer and composer, Munsey’s work has been described as “rich in invention and unexpected twists and turns” (San Diego Union-Tribune). His Brooklyn-based quintet is comprised of longtime collaborators Steph Richards (Henry Threadgill, Anthony Braxton), Amino Belyamani (Dawn of Midi, Ssahha), Sam Minaie (Tigran Hamasyan), and Ochion Jewell, and has been praised as “an avant-jazz group of heavies” (JazzTimes).

He received his BFA in Jazz Studies from the California Institute of the Arts under the mentorship of Joe LaBarbera. Prior to his arrival at the UW in Fall 2024 to serve as assistant professor of Music and Technology, he worked as a recording engineer  at UC San Diego.
