
Biography
Dr. Francisco Luis Reyes is an Assistant Professor of Music Education at the University of Washington. Born in Puerto Rico, Francisco holds a B.Mus in Jazz and Caribbean music from the Conservatorio de Música de Puerto Rico, an M.A. in Music Education from the Universidad de Granada, and a Ph.D. in Music Education from McGill University. His research interest include community music, African American music in music education, decolonial music education, Caribbean music education, pre-service music teacher education. His work has been published in The Canadian Music Educator, Research Studies in Music Education, the International Journal for Cross-Disciplinary Subjects in Education, Revista Praxis y Saber, and the International Journal of Music Education. As a presenter, Dr. Reyes has been invited to present in conferences in Italy, Sweden, Mexico, the United Kingdom, and across the United States as well as Canada.
As a music teacher, Dr. Reyes has taught instrumental and urban arts music in his home country of Puerto Rico, Montreal, and Cambridge, Massachusetts. At this level, he has taught musicianship skills, instrumental skills (saxophone, flute, clarinet, ukulele, barril de bomba, and midi keyboard controller), middle school band, and middle school and high school jazz band. At the UW, Dr. Reyes is in charge of instrumental music education and teaches courses on this matter as well as hip hop music, and the sociology of music.
As a musician, Dr. Reyes is a latin-grammy nominated artist that has shared stages with jazz musicians like Eddie Gómez, David Sánchez, and Brian Lynch, and latin music stars like Andy Montañez, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Aidita Encarnación Ilarraza, Jerry Medina, Lucy Fabery, Luis "Perico" Ortiz, and Germán Olivera. As a versatile musician, Dr. Reyes has performed with hip hop (Lado Ve), experimental pop (MIMA), Big Band (Humberto Ramirez Orchestra) ensembles as well as the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra and the Grammy nominated Puerto Rican ensemble Viento de Agua.
