Students, educators, and community members interested in participatory music-making gather at the University of Washington November 21-24 for a Seattle Participatory Arts Network conference. This four-day gathering will focus on participatory practices, especially music and dance, that encourage people of diverse skills and abilities to engage creatively.
Events are at the UW Waterfront Activities Center (3710 Montlake Blvd NE, Seattle, WA 98195) and the Seattle Amistad School (1501 10th Ave E, Seattle, WA 98102) and are free and open to the public.
A collaboration between UW and community arts groups, the symposium was instigated and organized by School of Music professor Shannon Dudley (Ethnomusicology) and Monica Rojas-Stewart (assistant professor, UW Dance), with support from the UW’s Simpson Center for the Humanities and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Guest speakers and participants include the School of Music’s Ethnomusicology Visiting Artists for 2024-25, Miguel Ballambrosio (Autumn 2024) and Silvio Dos Reis (Winter/Spring 2025); School of Music faculty and affiliate/adjunct faculty Shannon Dudley, Marisol Berríos Miranda, Francisco Reyes, Monica Rojas-Stewart, and John Vallier; alumni Christopher Mena, Emily Silks, past visiting artists Pablo Luis Rivera, Benjamin Hunter, Shoji Kameda, and many other past Ethnomusicology Visiting artists and community members.
