Biography
DMA, Cello Performance
Hye Jung (Helen) Yang received her Bachelor of music degree from Ewha Womens University in Seoul, South Korea. She is also a graduate of Sunwha Arts High School. Hye Jung previously studied cello with Il-hwan Bae, a professor at Ewah Womans University and graduate of the Juilliard School, Chul-ho Kim and Min Ji Kim. She moved to Unites States in 2004 and earned a Masters Degree of Arts in Pastoral Studies (Family Ministry) from Multnomah Biblical Seminary. She also completed a Masters Degree of Education from the Graduate School of Education of Portland State University. She studied with Hamilton Cheifetz, cello professor at Portland State University. She is currently pursuing her Doctorate of Musical Arts in cello performance and studying with Eric Gaenslen at the University of Washington, where she serves as principal cellist of UW Symphony Orchestra.
Hye Jung performed with the Mt. Hood Pops Orchestra in 2010. She performed the Elgar Cello Concerto with the PSU Symphony Orchestra. In 2008 Hye Jung was appointed to the position of Principal Cello for the Portland State University Symphony Orchestra. She was also the cellist of the Asiana string quartet, a group of musicians from Julliard, Eastman and Oregon Symphony. She performed for cellist Xavier Phillips and Ani Kalayjian in their master classes. She is an international performer and has traveled extensively, giving performances in India, South Korea and Hawaii. Hye Jung also enjoys playing Christian Music, serving local communities and church ministries with her musical excellence.
Hye Jung is a dedicated music educator and believes that children are the future of music. She instructs private students and they have gone on to All State Orchestras, Portland Youth Philharmonic (PYCO) and Metropolitian Youth Symphony. She has presented yearly recitals featuring her students. She completed her student teaching at Lake Oswego School District and became a licensed teacher in 2010. She continued to teach at Lake Oswego School District after her student teaching and also worked with Clackamas High School orchestras as a string technician. As a music educator she is also interested in conducting. She conducted at the Lake Oswego School District Orchestra Festival and was invited as the guest conductor of the Davis Douglas School District orchestra program in 2010. She also participated in the Oregon Conductor’s Symposium in 2009.
Hye Jung received many awards and scholarships. She was awarded First Prize in the 2009 PSU Symphony Concerto Competition. She was the second prize winner at the 1999 Korea Philharmonic Orchestra Competition and the 1996 International Youth Music Contest, South Korea. She received the School of Music String Program Scholarship at the University of Washington. She also received the Teach for Diversity Scholarship, Graduate School of Education Scholarship and Pi Lambda Theta Scholarship during her study at PSU. She received Ewha Hope Scholarshipduring her study atEwha Womans University.
