UW instrumental performance students perform for outside judges, competing for a chance to perform with the UW Symphony. Judges for this competition are Brian Shaw, trumpet, and Logan Esterling, oboe.

Biographies

Brian Shaw, trumpet

A native of Southern Illinois, Brian Shaw is Co-Principal Trumpet of the Dallas Winds and is Principal Trumpet of Santa Fe Pro Musica (NM) and Spire Baroque Orchestra (Kansas City). He is noted for his versatility, performing and recording regularly as a classical and jazz trumpeter on modern instruments and on period instruments as well. He is also very active as a jazz arranger and is currently co-writing a biography of jazz legend Kenny Wheeler. As a teacher, Dr. Shaw continues as guest instructor of Baroque trumpet at the Eastman School of Music after leaving his former position as Professor of Trumpet and Jazz Studies at Louisiana State University, which he held for nearly 15 years. He is currently also Interim Professor of Jazz at Bellevue College. He lives in Bothell, WA with his wife, Lana, his son, Thomas, his step-son, Elliot, and their family dog, Ernie. 

Logan Esterling, oboe

Logan Esterling currently holds the title of English Horn/Utility Oboe with Symphony Tacoma and the Yakima Symphony. He also plays Principal Oboe with the Bellevue Symphony and Seattle Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra. He regularly performs with the Seattle Symphony, Seattle Opera, Pacific Northwest Ballet, and Northwest Sinfonietta. Mr. Esterling’s freelance career has led him to perform with Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban, Evanescence, The Who, Lindsey Stirling, and "Weird Al" Yankovic. He has recorded music for prominent modern composers, DreamWorks shorts, and video games such as Destiny 2. Mr. Esterling earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Washington, where he studied with Mary Lynch. Now a passionate and dedicated teacher himself, he serves on the faculty of the University of Puget Sound, the DigiPen Institute of Technology, and the Marrowstone Music Festival.
